Permanent residents are able to enjoy many of the same benefits as those with Canadian citizenship status, including access to publicly funded healthcare and education, living and working in any Canadian province or territory, having a bank account, run your international business, and protection under the Canadian law and by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. However, there are a few key benefits for which only Canadian Citizens are permitted. These include the right to vote and run for office, the right to hold a Canadian passport, and the ability to pass citizenship to children born outside Canada. Since December 15, 2025 (Bill C-3), a Canadian parent who was also born or adopted outside Canada can pass on citizenship to a child born or adopted abroad if the parent spent at least 1,095 days (three years) in Canada before the child’s birth or adoption. The same law restored citizenship to many people affected by the former first-generation limit, who can now apply for proof of citizenship.
