Parent Sponsorship
The Canadian government’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a cornerstone of family reunification efforts, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents.
Program status: On July 15, 2026, IRCC paused the intake of new applications under the Parents and Grandparents Program. Until further notice, IRCC is not accepting new interest to sponsor forms or inviting sponsors to apply, but it continues to process applications already received and plans to approve up to 15,000 people under the program in 2026. In past years, sponsors submitted an interest to sponsor form during an intake period and were selected by random draw. While the program is paused, the super visa allows parents and grandparents to visit for up to five years at a time.
Sponsors must fulfill certain criteria, including a commitment to financially support their parents or grandparents for a specific period once they become permanent residents. The sponsored individuals are required to pass medical examinations and security checks. Once approved, they can gain permanent residency in Canada and may later apply for Canadian citizenship.
