On July 16, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced how it will run the 2025 intake of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). For families who have waited years to bring their parents to Canada, the details matter.
Key Points
- IRCC will accept up to 10,000 complete sponsorship applications in 2025.
- Invitations will go only to people who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020. No new form will be opened, because forms from 2020 are still unprocessed.
- Invitations begin on July 28, 2025 and will be sent over about two weeks.
- Invited sponsors must apply electronically through the Permanent Residence Portal or the Representative Permanent Residence Portal.
Who is Affected?
Canadian citizens and permanent residents who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 and have not yet been invited. If you submitted a form in 2020, check the email address you gave at that time, including your junk and spam folders.
If You Are Not Invited: The Super Visa
Families who do not receive an invitation can consider the super visa for parents and grandparents. According to IRCC, the super visa:
- is a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years
- allows stays of up to 5 years at a time
- allows extensions of up to 2 years at a time without leaving Canada
Next Steps for Sponsors
- Check the email account from your 2020 submission regularly once invitations begin.
- Prepare your income documents and family information in advance, since only complete applications are accepted.
- If you are not invited, consider whether the super visa suits your family.
Sponsoring a parent or grandparent is a long-term commitment, and the sponsor must meet the program’s requirements. Careful preparation lowers the risk of a returned or refused application.
