Big changes are coming to Canada’s immigration system! The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, and Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, have introduced new measures aimed at balancing temporary residency, addressing labour shortages, and supporting international students and foreign workers.
Reduction in Study Permits (2025)
Starting in 2025, Canada will reduce international student study permits by 10%, capping at 437,000. This is to address concerns over housing and public resources while continuing to support students pursuing education and work in Canada.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Updates
Beginning November 2024, PGWP applicants must meet new language proficiency requirements: CLB 7 for university grads and CLB 5 for college grads. Plus, only those studying fields with labour shortages will qualify for a 3-year work permit.
Work Permit Changes for Spouses
Only spouses of master’s students in 16-month+ programs or foreign workers in high-demand professions will be eligible for work permits.
Asylum System Enhancements
Canada is also improving its asylum system with measures like visa requirements for Mexican nationals, better fraud detection, and faster asylum claim processing.
The Future: By 2027, Canada plans to reduce temporary residents to 5% of the total population, ensuring the system remains sustainable and fair.
